Brody

When I get to Dublin, I book a room in a hotel under my alias. It's off the beaten track, and I can lie low. I toss my duffle bag on the armchair and call Alaina.

She answers, "Brody, I told ya this isn't going to work between us."

I curl my fist by my thigh, staring out over the rolling green hills. I insist, "It's not over between us. And stop saying it won't work. I'm not giving up on ya. Come meet me at my hotel."

"Brody, you're not listening to me," she says, her voice strained.

Part of me feels bad I'm adding to her stress. Yet I'm not walking away. So I pace the tiny room, stating, "We need to talk in person."

She sighs. "I can't. A lot is going on."

"Like what?" I push, the hairs on my arms rising. Whatever it is, it can't be good. I've never had anything but hatred for her father, but my distaste for him is at an all-time high.

She pauses, then relays, "I can't talk about it over the phone."

"If ya can't come to my hotel, I'll come to your house and pick ya up," I threaten, knowing she's not going to go for that. And I can't actually do it. It would be suicide to pull into her father's driveway.

She frets, "Brody, ya can't come to my house. Please don't do something stupid."

"Coming to see ya is stupid?" I taunt, knowing I need to push her until she agrees to come see me.

She groans. "Ya aren't listening to me. Why do ya have to make this harder?"

"Ya don't have feelings for me anymore? Ya left all of them in London?" I ask, but part of me worries she might agree.

"Of course I didn't leave them in London," she snaps.

"Then, if ya don't want me showing up on your doorstep, come to my hotel room. I'll send ya the address."

Tension fills the line.

I soften my voice, scared I might have taken the wrong path, stating the truth. "I need to see ya, a stór. You've gotten under my skin, and I can't just itch ya away."

She pauses another minute, then says, "I can't, Brody. I have to go to work. I've been given a job by my father, and if I don't meet his demand...well..."

Goose bumps pop out on my skin. "Finish your statement, lass," I order.

She blurts out, "He's going to marry me off to somebody else. So ya see, I don't have a choice. This isn't about how I feel about ya. This is the reality of my life."

"Alaina—"

"Go home, wherever that is, Brody," she interjects and hangs up.

I immediately call her back. She pushes me into voicemail. I send her a text.

Me: I'm not going home until I see ya, a stór.
